Upon a decision taken by the National Assembly of the United June Movement in December 2014, an extensive boycott was organized on February 13 for secular and scientific education. Despite strong intimidation by the government and the mass media, the boycott was 100 percent successful in many schools.
The boycott was a response to the introduction of compulsory religious courses at schools and conversion of a huge part of secondary schools into religious schools.
The Communist Party, Turkey, being an active component in the United June Movement, mobilized all its efforts for the success of the boycott and organized alternative lectures for school children in many of its local branches and cultural centers.
